High nuts are considerably thicker than standard hex nuts.

Aside from offering increased thread engagement with the bolt/screw, their height provides more surface area for wrenching, which makes them popular in the vehicle and industrial equipment industries.

Hex is short for hexagon, which means they have six sides.

High nuts are also known as:  tall nuts.   Lock washers may used with high nuts.
